Description

Solid bronze figure of a lion fighting a snake, a famous motif by A. BARYE.

  • Engraved on the plinth “A. BARYE” (Antoine-Louis Barye, 1795–1875), one of the most important French sculptors of the 19th century, famous for his animal depictions “Animaliers.”
  • Foundry’s mark: “J.B. Deposee, Bronze Garanti Paris,” dark brown patina.
  • Standing on a round, black marble plinth.
  • This sculpture, “Lion au serpent” or “Lion terrassant un serpent,” is one of Barye’s most famous works. The original was created around 1832 and cast in bronze in various sizes.
  • This is a high-quality recast in heavy bronze, probably from the second half of the 20th century from Paris.
